In a letter sent to the Internal Security Forces command, Interior Minister Ziad Baroud requested police to take stringent measures against any violation committed by stone crushing, stone quarry and sand making workers.
Baroud, in his letter, called for a freeze on all the operations associated with stone crushing, stone quarries and sand making that does not have a legal license issued by the Ministry of Environment.
He warned of "taking maximum disciplinary measures" against negligent policemen, including officers.

Mathis Quarries, east of the Wilkesboros near Windy Gap Road and U.S. 421 East, is now open and selling a variety of crushed stone products and fill dirt to customers in Wilkes and surrounding counties.
The new quarry is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday。 "Our affiliate company, Mathis & Son Grading, is available for delivery of stone and dirt, construction of roads and driveways and all phases of residential and commercial grading and excavating," he added.
Granite for the operation comes from a quarry pit used to produce gravel for the old two-lane U.S. 421 when it was built in the 1960s. In addition to securing state regulatory approval for a 31-acre site that includes the existing quarry pit on a ridge in the Little Brushy Mountains that runs parallel to U.S. 421, a scale house was built, permanent scales installed, road improvements made and additional excavating was conducted on the quarry pit.
Mathis said Rockydale Quarries Corp. of Roanoke, Va., is supplying stone crushing equipment and three operators through a contract with Mathis Quarries The only other crushed stone quarry in Wilkes is the Vulcan Materials quarry on N.C. 115 near North Wilkesboro.

Industrial production edged up 0.1 percent in March and increased at an annual rate of 7.8 percent in the first quarter. Manufacturing output rose 0.9 percent in March, led by widespread gains among durable goods industries.

The quarterly gain was boosted by strength in the production of industrial and other equipment and of information processing equipment. In March, information processing equipment recorded an increase of 1.9 percent and was led by gains in the production of search and detection equipment and of measuring and controlling instruments. Transit equipment advanced 2.2 percent, but this rise followed five months of declines; the index was down 6.9 percent at an annual rate in the first quarter. Industrial and other equipment increased 0.8 percent in March and gained 16.1 percent at an annual rate in the first quarter; the advance in the first quarter was this category's largest gain since the fourth quarter of 1987.
The production of defense and space equipment rose 1.7 percent in March and climbed 8.0 percent at an annual rate for the first quarter.

THE PRESENT status of stone crusher scenario in Orissa reflects the gloomy and lawlessness situation promoting the rapid growth of stone crusher units. Though it seems a small investment project but from pollution point of view it is categorized as highly polluting unit by state pollution control board.

It poses major threat to adjacent villages and the workers. Mostly these units work as unorganized sector without any legal compliance and social responsibilities. As per the information in proceedings of meeting dated 09/11/2009 taken by the chief secretary to discuss revision of siting criteria for stone crushers operating in the state that nearly 1572 stone crusher units are operating in Orissa.

It is found that 260 crusher units are found as defaulter for noncompliance of siting criteria in Jajpur district alone followed by khurda with 87 non-complied units. It is mandatory for all the existing and proposed stone crusher units to obtain consent to operate from the Orissa State Pollution Control Board under section 21 of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981.

Siting norms for stone crushers by Government of Orissa.

The stone crushers are required to meet the following norms regarding the siting of the unit The Forest and Environment Department order as published in Orissa Gazette Notification dated 13th May 1998 issued under section 5 of Environment Protection Act 1986 read as follows:
• All stone crusher units are to confirm to the pollution control measures and emission standards notified by Ministry of Environment and Forests from time to time
• No Stone Crusher should be allowed within 1 km of a town or a village.
• No Stone Crusher should be located within ½ km from National and State highways.
• Distance between two Stone Crusher units should be at least ½ km
• Stone crushers which are in the aforesaid prohibited land shall shift to other area with in six month from the date of publication of this notification in Orissa Gazette.

In the year 2006, the Government of Orissa came out with an order in Orissa Gazette dated August 1, 2006 amending the earlier order and omitting the expression “Distance between two Stone Crusher units should be atleast ½ km”. So after this order restriction of distance between two stone crushers is no more in force.
